Monday Markets: Gingerbread Retreat

Happy Monday! There are only four days left until Christmas; are you ready?

To celebrate the holidays, I’ll be putting a holiday twist on all of our regular posts this week, starting today with our Monday Market property.  This week, we’re featuring the sweetest home of all: a gingerbread house.

Gingerbread houses are the ultimate in open floor plan living. Other than the four walls holding up the roof, the rooms are entirely joined into one. The ceilings are vaulted, and there are very few ways in or out, adding security.

Gingerbread homes never experience changes in weather. Once the snow frosting has been squeezed onto the roof and spread around the yard, it stays snowy there forever. This makes a gingerbread home a genius holiday retreat. Stay for a white Christmas (very little decorating necessary), and then return to your warm, LA home after the presents have been opened. There is no lawn to mow, shrubs to trim, or landscaping to do. The exterior features that come with the home are pasted on with thick frosting; not even a winter storm could blow them away.

In case the winter storm really does blow some snow around enough to trap you inside, you won’t have to worry about going hungry until help arrives, even if your stuck for days. Because your home is made out of gingerbread, you can just break off part of a counter top and enjoy it.

Gingerbread homes are easy to repair. Simply bake a new section of the home and paste it on. This also makes additions a snap. Instead of hiring a contractor, you merely have to roll, cut and bake the walls you will require, and glue them on with the royal frosting (recipe included with most newer home models).

The downside to this home is that it is edible, and you may find it challenging to keep your neighbors friends and family from snacking on your home. Gumdrop bushes and mint wreathes tend to disappear overnight. If the snow begins to melt and turn to slush, or if your home is built in a moist environment, you may have a problem with mold or the walls simply collapsing, too soft to hold the weight of the rooftop.

There are a lot of great reasons to consider the purchase of your very own gingerbread retreat. It’s a great way to spend the holidays. On site construction and other home projects are a breeze. As an added bonus, these homes are readily available in do-in-yourself format or already assembled and awaiting decor. You can make it as ornate or as bland as you wish. The neighbors are easy to get along with; if yo have a disagreement, you can eat them (as they are also made of gingerbread).

These homes start at $20.00, and are readily available at most department or grocery stores. Pick one up today, and you too could be enjoying a sugary white Christmas within an hour or two.
